Registration deadline today for pre-Goldschmidt alphaMELTS 2 workshop in Hawaii

Gentle reminder that there is just one day left to take advantage of reduced registration rates for the Goldschmidt 2022 conference. If you're attending in-person then we hope you'll also include the "Thermodynamic Modeling of Magmatic Processes with alphaMELTS 2" workshop in your Hawai'i plans!

The workshop will focus on using the alphaMELTS 2 interface, and alphaMELTS for MATLAB/Python, while also providing background to the MELTS family of models by Ghiorso and coworkers. The workshop will run all day Saturday June 20th, and Sunday June 21st and will finish early enough for participants to attend the icebreaker at the Goldschmidt 2022 conference.

The full price registration is $190 for two days, which includes lunch and refreshments. Early Career Researchers (students, postdocs, and/or research scientists within 6 years of their PhD) get two-thirds off the workshop fee, so pay $65, and some conference Grant-holders can attend for free.

The deadline to register for the pre-conference workshops is the same as early bird conference registration: May 31st, 11:59 PM HST (June 1st, 9:59 AM UTC/GMT).

The MELTS family of algorithms is widely used by petrologists and geochemists to predict the outcomes of melting and crystallization processes, to compare with experiments or to design experimental campaigns, to assess the energy budgets of igneous processes, to teach the principles of igneous petrology, and more. Although there are a variety of ways to access such models, this workshop will focus on the alphaMELTS 2 interface and access to alphaMELTS from MATLAB, Python, and R programming environments. alphaMELTS 2 is a text-based front end to the Rhyolite-MELTS, pMELTS, and pHMELTS models, with built-in trace element calculations and a variety of unique features and workflows. Day 1 will cover introductory material and basic functionality, whereas Day 2 will focus on more advanced features, larger-scale calculations, and special problems suggested by attendees.

This two-day, in-person workshop will be suitable for any user or prospective user of alphaMELTS 2 or related software, whether for teaching or research. No commercial software or previous knowledge of MELTS in general, or alphaMELTS in particular, is required. Instructors Paul Asimow and Paula Antoshechkina from Caltech will cover software installation, hands-on examples for a variety of igneous settings, and some undocumented tricks that are important to getting reliable results from MELTS calculations. They will also hold an online short course later in the year for anyone unable to join Goldschmidt2022 in-person, and as a refresher for existing users interested in the newest alphaMELTS 2 software developments.
