We are please to announce a two day workshop Thermodynamic Modeling of Magmatic Processes with alphaMELTS 2, focusing on the newly available alphaMELTS 2 interface, and alphaMELTS for MATLAB/Python. The workshop will run all day Saturday June 20th, and Sunday June 21st and will finish early enough for participants to attend the icebreaker at the Goldschmidt 2020 conference. This workshop will differ from previous (alpha)MELTS workshops in that it will be structured so that participants can attend either or both days, depending on their needs and previous experience:

  • Day 1 (Saturday) will focus on introductory material and basic functionality for new users, and as a refresher for alphaMELTS users who have not tried alphaMELTS 2 or alphaMELTS for MATLAB/Python. Day 1 will constitute sufficient preparation for a novice to appreciate Day 2, but will also be a self-contained introduction to alphaMELTS should a participant wish to coordinate with another Goldschmidt 2020 workshop on Sunday.
  • Day 2 (Sunday) will focus on the latest features, more advanced or larger-scale calculations, and special problems suggested by attendees, with the possibility of a 'MELTS clinic' for one-on-one help with alphaMELTS calculations  Users who have attended a previous alphaMELTS workshop - especially the recent NSF-sponsored workshops at the University of Maryland (December 2018), and Caltech (July 2019) - should be able to appreciate Day 2 without attending Day 1.
The registration is $125 for two days / $65 for one day, and includes lunch, refreshments, and a $5 materials fee. You can add the workshop during Goldschmidt 2020 conference registration, or via the alphaMELTS 2 workshop details on the Goldschmidt workshops page. You will be able to choose between "Saturday and Sunday", "Saturday only", or "Sunday only" once you have entered your contact details etc.

We hope to see you in Hawaii!

With the move to a Virtual Conference, we have decided not to hold the original Goldschmidt-hosted workshop, Thermodynamic Modeling of Magmatic Processes with alphaMELTS 2, but will be holding our own online workshop(s) from Caltech instead. We are still working out the details, but in the meantime some info:

  • The workshop(s) will be open to all, whether or not they are attending the Virtual Goldschmidt conference, and there will be no fee.
  • Due to extra commitments, for instructors and participants alike (e.g. homeschooling, putting courses online), we will definitely not be holding the online workshop on the original pre-Goldschmidt dates, but at some point later in the summer.
  • We have typically held pre-Goldschmidt workshops for about 50 people, but we will host smaller groups for the online version so that it can still be interactive. We will offer more (not necessarily consecutive) dates so that everyone who wants to can attend.
  • We will try to group participants to make the online format work more easily e.g. for the Day 1 material it would be helpful to have everyone using the same operating system, whereas Day 2 may be grouped more by participants' interest. A registration form will be posted to help with this scheduling.
We will update the workshop website with the Latest News as things develop, and post a link to the registration form when it is ready.

We hope to see you online!
