α alphaMELTS 2 software is available in compiled executable form, for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux (including the Windows Subsystem for Linux). Currently executables for all three platforms are included in the same package. The package is available on GitLab if you provide use with your username (see the alphaMELTS 2 page). Alternatively, during the alphaMELTS 2 workshop, you can download the package from the MAGMA Source GitList server without needing to sign up. Supplementary updates of the alphamelts executables, without the ancillary files, will be provided for bug-fixes and new features.
Choose your operating system from the links on the right. Please see the *README* for a more information. To reset the page to the Windows version click the DOWNLOAD tab above.
Double-click the .zip archive to expand it and then run the installation script. The brief instructions below have been updated for alphaMELTS 2 and should work for most set ups. For a fuller description of the isntallation process please see the 'Installation' section of the documentation (though bear in mind that because the manual is for alphaMELTS 1.X you will need to substitute 'install2.command' for 'install.command' in the manual instructions; similarly 'package' for the name of the download folder, and 'run-alphamelts.command' for 'run_alphamelts.command').
The 'install2.command' script will select the appropriate executable for the operating system ('alphamelts_linux' in the case of the WSL). Brief installation instructions for Windows:Important: the 'install.command' script may print a message that you need to set the path variable, together with brief operating-system-specific instructions on how to do this. Please do not skip this step! Most reported problems in running alphaMELTS are because the user has not set the path. The Forum FAQ have more information on setting the path (including workarounds if this is not possible). Consult the alphaMELTS 2 page for links to alphaMELTS 2-specific help.
MacOS alphaMELTS 2 is available for Intel
processors only. Admin privileges are not required. The alphaMELTS 2 exetable was built using the MacOS 10.14 (Mojave) SDK.
Linux alphaMELTS 2 was built on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. The executable should run on
other systems but if not please let us know, including the OS version and the output of
'gcc -v'.
WSL alphaMELTS 2 is a good
option for alphaMELTS 2 on Windows 10, as the Linux installation
includes Perl etc. WSL does require admin access for initial set up but not for updating alphaMELTS.
With alphaMELTS for MATLAB/Python and/or easyMelts, it is easiest to have the same alphaMELTS 2 version.
Windows alphaMELTS is supported on 64-bit Windows 10 only
Perl
is not necessary but helpful in alphaMELTS 2. MATLAB contains a small Perl installation,
or Perl can easily be installed via Anaconda. Otherwise, for users without admin access we recommend the
portable version of Strawberry Perl 🍓
