Install alphaMELTS 2
The current version is 2.0 posted on 18th November, 2020.
α alphaMELTS 2 software is available in compiled executable form, for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux (including the Windows Subsystem for Linux). Currently executables for all three platforms are included in the same package. The package is available on GitLab if you provide use with your username (see the alphaMELTS 2 page). Alternatively, during the alphaMELTS 2 workshop, you can download the package from the MAGMA Source GitList server without needing to sign up. Supplementary updates of the alphamelts executables, without the ancillary files, will be provided for bug-fixes and new features.
Choose your operating system from the links on the right. Please see the *README* for a more information. To reset the page to the Windows version click the DOWNLOAD tab above.
Double-click the .zip archive to expand it and then run the installation script. The brief instructions below have been updated for alphaMELTS 2 and should work for most set ups. For a fuller description of the isntallation process please see the 'Installation' section of the documentation (though bear in mind that because the manual is for alphaMELTS 1.X you will need to substitute 'install2.command' for 'install.command' in the manual instructions; similarly 'package' for the name of the download folder, and 'run-alphamelts.command' for 'run_alphamelts.command').
The 'install2.command' script will select the appropriate executable for the operating system ('alphamelts_linux' in the case of the WSL). Brief installation instructions for Windows:- First make sure MATLAB (which includes Perl), the Perl package in Anaconda, or standalone Perl is installed: for Windows users without admin access we recommend the portable version of Strawberry Perl; simply unzip the file and, optionally, move the folder to a more convenient location on your hard disk (the alphaMELTS 'install2.command' script will do the required set up later).
- Install the Windows Terminal (recommended): search for 'Windows Terminal' in the Microsoft Store. Selecting 'Command Prompt' from the drop down menu (the 'V' button) is the best way to run scripts like 'run-alphamelts.command'.
- To install the alphaMELTS 2 package: right-click 'install2.command' to choose 'Open with...' and browse to the 'perl.exe' executable (e.g. strawberry_perl_folder\perl\bin\perl.exe, or 'C:\Program Files\MATLAB\Rrelease\sys\perl\win32\bin\perl.exe’, or 'C:\Users\username\Anaconda3\Library\bin\perl.exe’). It is easiest to take the default settings for the installation script.
- To update alphamelts 2: simply replace the scripts and/or executables in the alphaMELTS 2 'package' folder (without renaming). If the 'package' folder has moved since alphaMELTS 2 was last installed then run 'install2.command' by double-clicking it or by typing 'install2.command' in the Command Prompt.
Important: the 'install.command' script may print a message that you need to set the path variable, together with brief operating-system-specific instructions on how to do this. Please do not skip this step! Most reported problems in running alphaMELTS are because the user has not set the path.
