Presentations for alphaMELTS workshop

These are the presentations from the NSF-sponsored GeoInformatics workshop at Caltch in July 2019. These are for alphaMELTS 2, and alphaMELTS for MATLAB/Python. The files may have been modified slightly since previous workshops, to fix typos or incorporate suggestions (at the very least they have been renamed to make them easier to keep track of).

Example files for alphaMELTS workshop

These are all the latest versions of the examples from the NSF-sponsored GeoInformatics series of workshops. Some alphaMELTS for MATLAB/Python are included here, some are in the 'examples' folder of MELTS_Matlab. Others that we did on the fly at the workshop will be uploaded when they have been tidied up some more. They may have been modified slightly since the last workshop, to fix typos or add new examples. A convenient way to get all the files is to go the workshops GitList server and click the 'ZIP' button. If you want to find the exact files from a workshop you attended, please visit the alphaMELTS archive page. During a workshop, updates and new files will be posted in this workshop working files directory (opens in a new window).

• The Rhyolite-MELTS graphical user interface (GUI) can be downloaded for Macs running El Capitan (10.11) and later at the Mac OS X rhyolite-MELTS page. Try the rhyolite-Melts-Mac-OS-10.12+.zip executable; if you have any problems see troubleshooting information on the alphaMELTS links page and forum. Test the installation using the MELTS (GUI) version of the 'Quick start using MELTS' tutorial.
• The lightweight VirtualBox Linux installation that will be distributed as part of the workshop (also available for download on the alphaMELTS download page) includes the latest rhyolite-MELTS and alphaMELTS 2.
• alphaMELTS 1.9 is available for Intel Macs running El Capitan (10.11) onwards. Go to the alphaMELTS download page and click the Apple link in the box for more information and download links. You will need to sign up for the MELTS Software Users Forum. Test the installation using the alphaMELTS version of the 'Quick start using MELTS' tutorial.
• MELTS for Excel will only run on Windows machines (see below) but a pared down version containing only the "Combine tbl" function will be used for quickly visualizing alphaMELTS 2 results.

• The version of rhyolite-MELTS linked on the MELTS Linux Download site is out of date. Instead, see the alphaMELTS links page for more details and brief installation instructions. Test the installation using the MELTS (GUI) version of the 'Quick start using MELTS' tutorial.
• alphaMELTS 1.9 is available for 64-bit Linux machines. Go to the alphaMELTS download page and click the Tux (penguin) link in the box for more information and download links. You will need to sign up for the MELTS Software Users Forum. Test the installation using the alphaMELTS version of the 'Quick start using MELTS' tutorial.
• MELTS for Excel will only run on Windows machines (see below) but a pared down version containing only the "Combine tbl" function will be used for quickly visualizing alphaMELTS 2 results.

• The rhyolite-MELTS GUI is not available for Windows but you can install the Linux version on computers running the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). See the alphaMELTS links page and forum for details.
• If you cannot use the WSL, the lightweight VirtualBox Linux installation that will be distributed as part of the workshop (also available for download on the alphaMELTS download page) includes the latest rhyolite-MELTS and alphaMELTS.
• alphaMELTS 1.9 is available for Windows 7 or later (though Windows 7 will reach end of life soon). The executables were built on Windows 10. Go to the alphaMELTS download page and click the Windows link in the box for more information and download links. You will need to sign up for the MELTS Software Users Forum. Windows users will need to install the Perl program (unless they have MATLAB already installed). Test the installation using the alphaMELTS version of the 'Quick start using MELTS' tutorial.
• As mentioned above, a VirtualBox Linux installation of alphaMELTS, which avoids having to install the Perl program on Windows, will be distributed as part of the workshop (and is also available for download on the alphaMELTS download page) and also includes alphaMELTS 2.
• A MELTS_Excel macro-enabled workbook can be downloaded from the MELTS for Excel page. A suitable version of Excel must be installed and an active internet connection is required. Test the installation using the Excel-MELTS version of the 'Quick start using MELTS' tutorial.
